Participation in GCC's online orientation hovered around 17-19%, and the students who skipped it were the ones most likely to disappear. So I rebuilt it as a spy thriller. Students join the Order of the Clocktower by completing short missions in Brightspace, earning bronze, silver, gold, and platinum badges across four tracks, with a few hidden badges for anyone who finds the mascot. Real GCC staff and faculty show up as "fellow agents" with video clues, so names in an email signature become faces. Weekly nudges, written with the Octalysis framework, keep students moving. SUNY Online featured the redesign in its Student Support Spotlight. The theory behind it, andragogy, microlearning, and gamification for adult learners, is in my capstone outline below.

"As a cohort, online students bring with them a broad spectrum of readiness levels for online learning. Furthermore, online students frequently juggle multiple responsibilities, which place significant time demands on them and make it challenging for them to prioritize the time required for an orientation course.
Genesee Community College addressed these challenges with a redesign of their orientation course that provided promising early results and positive student feedback."
