Norton Anti-Virus becomes a security risk

Well, now I've seen just about everything. Symantec, makers of Norton Anti-Virus products, have acknowledged a fault in THEIR OWN PROGRAM that would allow a hacker to take over your PC. Nice.

There's a bit of technical jargon here: http://www.securiteam.com/windowsntfocus/6L00L15H5S.html but what you need to know is this:

If you have Norton (Symantec) Anti-Virus in Corporate versions 9.0.3 and earlier or Client Security versions 2.0.3 and earlier, you are now vulnerable to attack from the very program you've installed to help prevent such attacks.

I've said for a long time that Norton is not a great product ... but they are the market leader. Some folks just won't believe that thousands of lemmings could possibly be wrong. Others don't like my alternative because it's free. There's still that stigma attached to free software that it won't work correctly or can't be relied upon (sometimes true).

However, I'll once again call for all Norton users to switch to Avast! for anti-virus. Avast! is free for personal use (corporate users pay a small annual fee), it automatically downloads virus updates, it protects against viruses, trojans, email hacks, instant messaging hacks and network worms ... what else can you ask for in a protective app?

Well, I guess you could ask that the protective app *itself* should be secure :)

http://www.avast.com ... go there. Get it.
